How do you become a Tennessee Scholar?

  1. Sign Up with Your School Counselor

There is an application that you can either download from the internet or pick up from the school counselor that outlines all of the criteria for becoming a State Scholar in Tennessee .   Complete that application and give it to your School Counselor.

  1. Take the right courses

These courses are a bit more rigorous than you would take to graduated with a regular diploma. These are the courses that business is willing to reward you for taking because they will better prepare you for college and work.

  1. Make sure you meet the requirements for attendance, discipline, and community service.

Attendance is 95% each year. That criterion was set by the business leaders because being a Tennessee Scholar means that you have developed work habits for 4 years that are the same as ones that are required to maintain a good job record and to keep your job position if you were an actual employee.   An employer does not look at how many doctors excuses you have or what you situation was, they just look at the attendance record. Unless the absences over the 95% were due to an extended hospital stay or illness, the 95% rule for being a Tennessee Scholar must be adhered to. Doctor’s or dentist appointments must be made after school hours or early enough to attend school at least 85% of the school day.

Discipline includes “0” out-of-school suspensions. That means stay out of trouble.

Your community service hours must be done after school hours and must be documented by a signature from the person in charge of the event.

  1. You must maintain a “C” average. The “C” average is the average of all courses taken.

  2. All students must complete the following application, signed by parents, and turn in to counselor before a Tennessee Scholars award will be given.   Grades, attendance, discipline, and community service is subject to be checked by a State or National Scholars Representative.
